Right now Doom 3 is CoreAudio, although its possible it will move to OpenAL at some point. We're definitely planning to add 5.1 support in the future.

The Altivec code in Doom 3 is custom, not a specific library.ĥ.1 audio isn't in the initial release of Doom 3 Mac. The PowerPC architecture does have some inherent overhead issues (float to int conversion, data alignment problems) that can't be optimized away, so most of the app level things we did were spot fixes. The engine is well engineered and optimized to start with, so it is feeding data to OpenGL about as fast as the drivers/cards can handle it. Most of the application level optimizations for Doom3 are also like this- they gain a few percentage points here and there. It helps a few percentage points, since its mostly for sound and physics. Its faster than without Altivec, but we're not getting double the speed or anything like that. Yes, Doom 3 does have Altivec specific optimizations on the Mac.Īs far as Altivec, how much does it help- I don't have a hard number, since we haven't built a non-altivec version in several months. Ugh.Īnd btw, regarding the "duh" comment for Nvidia's Ultrashadow II technology being exploited in D3: It looks as if at the the moment, despite owning the pimpest-Mac gaming rig out there, there's no way you'll have anywhere near a consistent 60fps performance, even if you drop the res as low as it will go.

That's over a 3 fold difference in speed - wah!? MacWorld states that in-game performance is generally better than the timedemo, but that's not really the case over the full game - the later levels start throwing lots of enemies at you, and the timedemo can be generous by comparison in some spots. Not being able to break 47fps at 640*480 with that setup is just pitiful, PC's can get over 150fps at that res with a 6800, ~130 fps with an 800XT. Considering this is the most powerful Mac configuration available, and my XP2500 + 6600GT is generating better benchmarks at every res (and it's largely held back by the processor), that's quite bad. Yes, it's not multithreaded - but as iD has commented previously, it does little for this engine, like 99% of PC games - and of course has nothing to do with the fact the GPU is a large limiting factor in Doom3 regardless. With that in mind, these benchmarks are extremely poor. Yes, the 6800 is faster, although Aspyr is quoted by MacWorld as stating the difference isn't as great as it is on the PC. Doom3 demands both a fast CPU and GPU, but more so on the GPU, which is why I'm so surprised at these results, even taking the large architectural differences into account.
